Productivity Programs in my computer

My desktop computer in the lab is a Mac Pro. I also installed Windows XP on this computer through VMWare.

1. Windows XP (and 7, now windows 10 64bit)
   major working environment, including manuscript writing, data analysis, preparing presentation etc
2. MS Word
   Writing papers, tracking change
   (I used Google Doc before and I don’t feel ‘productive’ there.)
   Not for figure manipulation (done in MS PowerPoint)
3. MS Excel
   Storing well structured data (such as behavior data or NIRS data)
   Simple calculation (sum, average)
   Simple chart (usually for initial inspection. Will copy/past to PowerPoint for further editing)
4. MS PowerPoint
   Talk, Presentation
   Editing figures to meet the journal standard, will insert the figures to MS Word later (In Word, paste special, select “Picture (Enhanced Metafile)”)
   Storing figures/result for notes (for personal review later when I almost forget)
   Note sometimes Mac and Windows are not compatible.
5. Notepad
   Paste formatted text here to get rid of the format. Then copy to other programs.
6. Adobe Photoshop
   Producing journal standard TIFF figures (PowerPoint is not good at this)
   I don’t use Photoshop to edit figures
7. Adobe PDF reader
   Reading PDFs
8. MS Paint
   Screen capture and paste into MS paint for cropping. For example, I usually screen capture brain images displayed by xjview and crop in MS paint.
9. PaperBox (http://www.paper-box.co) and Cite
   Reference managing / sharing / reading
   Highly recommended
10. [new] Stork notify me important publications, grants etc every day
11. MatLab
    Data analysis
    Writing stimuli paradigms (with Psychophysics toolbox 3)
    Producing figures (will copy to MS PowerPoint for further editing: color, line width, size etc)
12. xjView
    fMRI / NIRS visualization
    Highly recommended
13. Firefox
    Web browsing. I rarely use IE or Safari. Sometimes use Chrome when writing web applications (e.g. xjview feed)
14. Flex Builder
    IDE for AIR application development
15. NotePad++
    HTML/PHP editor (I used to use FlashDevelop)
16. EasyCapture
    Capture screen, window, or selected region. Use it a lot. On windows 10 I use snipping tool.

18. VMWare
    Installing Windows/Linux in Mac
19. gmail
    check email
20. google calendar
21. DropBox
    Sync files over different computers, collaboration
